Patricia
Patricia is one of the best-documented and most iconic jaguars ever studied in the Northern Pantanal. As the official mascot of the Jaguar Identification Project, she represents our mission and has become the face of our research and conservation efforts.
For more than a decade, Patricia has helped us better understand jaguar maternal behavior, cub survival, territorial fidelity, tolerance to tourism, predator interactions, and resilience in a changing landscape.
Her life tells the story of the Pantanal — from raising cubs and defending her territory to surviving fires, floods, and other challenges faced by wild jaguars. Every observation has deepened our knowledge of the species and strengthened our commitment to its conservation.
More than a research subject, Patricia is an ambassador for jaguar conservation and a symbol of the wild beauty and resilience of the Pantanal.
Meet Patricia's Story
Ousado
Some jaguars are observed, others become legends. Ousado, whose name means "the bold one," is one of them.
A young male from the Encontro das Águas State Park, Ousado became a symbol of hope after the devastating Pantanal wildfires of 2020. Found with severely burned paws and unable to walk, he was rescued through the joint efforts of several conservation organizations and underwent emergency rehabilitation.
Just 40 days later, Ousado made a remarkable recovery and was released back into his territory. Today, he is once again a thriving wild jaguar, renowned for his skill in hunting caiman by diving underwater.
Ousado's story is one of resilience, survival, and the enduring spirit of the Pantanal — a powerful reminder of why protecting this extraordinary ecosystem is so important.
